ONE of Hampshire’s wackiest summer spectaculars – the Great Waterside Raft Race – takes to the water again tomorrow.

Pubs, clubs and other organisations are hoping to paddle their way to glory in the water-soaked contest, which takes place between Hythe Marina and the village’s 2,100ft pier.

A huge crowd is expected to line the esplanade and cheer on their favourite teams as the crews desperately try to stay afloat.

The Daily Echo is one of the companies taking part in the event, which raises funds for RNLI and last year netted almost £6,000.

A race spokesman said: “It’s one of the few raft races that are held on the sea, which adds an element of excitement not found in river races.

“The course is laid out between the marina and the pier and is always held between the two high tides unique to the Solent area.”

Last year staff from Ebenezer’s bar in Pylewell Road, Hythe, scooped five prizes on the day, coming first in four of the six races as well as being presented with the Parnell Cup for best overall effort.

The ladies’ race was won by the King George pub with their craft Elsie May.

The Waterside Theatre won the prize for the most ingenious craft with its depiction of The Calendar Girls, while the Ghostbusters craft entered by the Daily Echo won the decorated raft race.

The annual event produces plenty of thrills and spills and Calshot’s two lifeboats are always on hand in case of emergency.

The races start at 10am, with prizes being presented later in the day.
