A SOUTHAMPTON man who has worked for the Air Training Corps for 39 years has been awarded a qualification in recognition of his achievements.

Anton Smith, from Hedge End, spends two evenings a week and some weekends working with young people aged 13 to 20 at ATC Hampshire and Isle of Wight wing.

The 52-year-old has been a member of the ATC since he was 13 and became a junior officer at 20. Now a Senior Squadron Leader, Anton has been awarded the Graduate of City and Guilds Institute for his management and training of youths.

The youth group offers youngsters the chance to learn flying, gliding, shooting, a range of sports, model building, map reading, orienteering, New Forest exercises and take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Anton spent almost two years studying for the qualification and was presented with the award at a ceremony on board HMS Collingwood in Ports-mouth.

The building surveyor is a first aid training advisor and health and safety officer for the ATC Hampshire and Isle of Wight division.

The father-of-two said: "I didn't go to university so I'm very proud of the award as it is degree status. It's a tremendous award and I would recommend others to have a crack at it."
