FIVE people had to be rescued after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Southampton.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the three-storey house at Westridge Road in Portswood that had been converted into flats just before 1am today.
They found several people at the windows of flats on the first and second floors calling for help after their rooms became filled with smoke.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the burning building and led five people to safety.
They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
It is thought the fire started on stairs between the first and second floors.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
