MOTORISTS face delays on a busy Hampshire motorway from today due to essential safety improvements.

The M27 westbound link road to the M3 at Bassett Wood is being fitted with new parapets to improve safety which will mean a 50mph speed limit and narrow lanes for motorists while the work is being carried out overnight.

Steve Cobb, Highways Agency project manager, said: "We're replacing the parapets that are on the link road now with a newer version that will last longer and have greater strength. This will greatly improve the safety on the westbound link road between the M27 and the M3."

Some lane closures on the main M27 carriageway and 10 full closures of the westbound link road will also be needed in the course of the work.

The first closure of the link road will be overnight between 10pm and 6am each night this week and again overnight on 18 December.

When the full closures are in place motorists will be asked to continue their journey along the M27 to Junction 3 at Nursling where they can leave turn around and join the M3 at Chilworth.

There will be no closures between 19 December and 4 January so that motorists will not be affected over Christmas and the work is hoping to be completed by the end of March 2007.
