A DECISION is expected to be announced before Christmas on the future of a military base near Winchester.

The government is due to outline the future of training for the three armed services.

The Ministry of Defence will decide which of two consortia will run new training centres across the country.

The Holdfast Consortium is proposing a £100 million plan to expand the Adjutant General's Corps base at Worthy Down, north of the city. It would become the Defence College of Logistics and Personnel Administration.

Building work would create 300 construction jobs and the base would have more than 400 teaching and training posts.

There would be environment spin-offs. Some farmland between Worthy Down and South Wonston would be returned to chalk downland. No tank driving or night-time training would take place.

David Selby, chairman of South Wonston Parish Council, said he hoped the changes would free up land to allow the council to bid for land.

The future of Worthy Down would be unclear if the other bidders win the contract.
