WORKS to improve the major junction  are due to start tomorrow.

Hampshire County Council’s £150,000 project will see the existing layout at  Stanmore Lane and Romsey Road changed with a second traffic lane added to the junction approach as well as the removal of the pedestrian crossing.

A new uncontrolled crossing is to be installed further to the south of the crossing point.

The works are expected to last around nine weeks and Stanmore Lane will be closed northbound from April 7-18 while it is widened.

Temporary traffic lights will be installed and a diversion route will be in place while these works are completed.

Hampshire County Council’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, Cllr Sèan Woodward, commented: “The improvements to Stanmore Lane junction will help relieve traffic congestion on a key access route into Winchester city centre, as well as provide a new pedestrian crossing point which is further away from the junction.

“There will inevitably be some disruption during the construction period, especially over the Easter school break, but we urge people to bear with us during this time as I am confident local residents will see improvements afterwards.”
