A PAIR of Hampshire teenagers are preparing for a trip of a lifetime to help deprived youngsters thousands of miles across the world.

Jaspreet Puaar and Tessa Cowan will be flying out to Fiji this summer to improve education for 300 children.

The 19-year-olds will spend ten weeks working at two schools on Koro Island.

During that time they will install a solar panel at the island’s high school, which currently has no electricity, provide educational resources and materials, help with lesson plans and teach youngsters how to swim to help improve survival rates when the island faces flooding or tsunamis.

The girls decided to organise the trip after Jaspreet, from Bassett Heath Avenue, Bassett, was inspired to do more the community after she stayed there as a volunteer earlier this year – and enlisted the help of her friend Tessa, a sociology student from Harestock Road, Winchester.

But before they leave this June, they need to raise £5,000 to pay for the solar panel and resources including books, stationery and sports equipment.

Jaspreet, a swimming teacher at Shirley swimming pool, said: “I wanted to do something independently so that we know where the money is going and see the difference first hand.”
