WORK to improve a Winchester junction was due to start today.
Hampshire County Council’s £150,000 project will see the layout changed at Stanmore Lane and Romsey Road.
A second lane will be added to the approach and the pedestrian crossing removed.
A new uncontrolled crossing is to be installed further to the south of the crossing point.
The work is expected to last around nine weeks and Stanmore Lane will be closed northbound until Good Friday for the widening. Temporary traffic lights will be installed and a diversion put in place.
The county’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, Cllr Sean Woodward, said: “The improvements to Stanmore Lane junction will help relieve traffic congestion on a key access route into Winchester city centre, as well as provide a new pedestrian crossing point.”
