THE most enduring love story of all time is brought to the stage featuring groundbreaking choreography and unforgettable songs.
West Side Story, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, includes moves choreographed by the legendary Jerome Robbins and Maria, America and I Feel Pretty among the score’s many classics.
West Side Story changed the face of musical theatre for ever. Now Joey McKneely’s vibrant stage production is thrilling audiences again direct from a sellout season at London’s Sadler’s Wells, international critical acclaim and a previous Southampton visit.
The two-week Mayflower run will feature a local lad in the form of Scott Rayner, pictured, who plays Snow Boy.
He told Your Entertainment: “It’s a great show, the sort of show people like me train their whole lives for. For me, it’s got everything.”
Twenty-two-year-old Scott, from Ringwood, has an impressive Southampton heritage and will be performing for a coachload of Hampshire-based family and friends.
His grandfather Ray Rayner was once the leader of Southampton City Council and was instrumental in introducing the Boat Show to the city.
West Side Story relocates the classic story to 1950s New York where two rival gangs The Sharks and The Jets battle for turf and star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony meet, but their love story ends in tragedy.
- The musical is at The Mayflower from Tuesday until Saturday May 3. Click here for tickets>>
