COUNCILLORS will decide tonight whether to give the green light to more than 100 homes in Hampshire countryside.

Barratt Homes wants to build up to 125 homes and a 70-bed care facility in Bursledon, but it faces opposition from residents.

They fear it will cause traffic problems, overwhelm local facilities and result in a loss of the gap that separates communities.

The plans to be discussed at the latest Bursledon, Hamble-le-Rice and Hound Local Area Committee is for land at Berry Farm, in Hamble Lane, Bursledon, and would include a new roundabout and improvements to cycle and footpaths on Hamble Lane.

Thirty-two residents have objected, arguing that surrounding roads, particularly Hamble Lane, cannot cope with more traffic and that the roundabout at the Portsmouth Road junction will cause further tailbacks.

A council report has recommended refusal due to concerns about damaging “the identity of existing communities” and the “impact on road safety”.

It comes less than a fortnight after a planning appeal hearing against councillors’ refusal of plans to build up to 150 homes at land west of Hamble Lane, in Bursledon.

The meeting is being held tonight at Hamble Primary School at 6pm.
