SAFER New Forest and the Home Office are advising people on how to protect their mobile phones.
Phone owners are advised to check for security features that are intended to stop anyone else using a phone if it is stolen, including creating a PIN code that locks the handset, downloading an app that enables the phone to be traced, locking it and wiping data remotely and setting it to need a separate password or account ID if someone is trying to reset it.
More information can be found at police.uk/crimeprevention-advice/protectingyour-mobile-phone.
It’s also worth taking a note of the phone’s IMEI number, available by typing *#06# on the keypad, in case the phone is lost or stolen.
