This was the moment one teacher sacrificed his beloved beard for young carers at a Southampton school.
Richard Bruce, a design and technology teacher, has raised £140 for young carers at his school Oasis Academy Lordshill.
After funding was cut for young carers in Southampton, the school has been working hard to support their students with days out and group sessions. The 46-year-old from Shirley was surrounded by school children cheering as his colleague chopped off the 10cm beard and prefects went round with donation buckets.
Mr Bruce has been at the school for a year and said: “I’m a bit cold now but this was a fun way to raise money and it will go towards taking our young carers out for a day trip and give them a chance to be kids.
“I really like how it’s all about the kids at this school and we see our young carers regularly to see how they are getting on.
The school’s Young Carer liaison April Newton said: “It’s just fantastic to do something so supportive, it’s a really nice thing to do and very heartfelt, he is a good man and hopefully it will inspire other teachers to do something too.”
