HAMPSHIRE civic chief Roy Perry has called for more independence for the county.
Cllr Perry was speaking after greater recognition was last week given to Cornwall and calls were made for a greater role for Wessex.
Cllr Perry said: “As a firm believer in the integrity of the UK and its great history and the benefits we all derive from being part of a united country, were I to have a vote in the Scottish independence referendum I know I would vote to retain the UK.
“So I certainly do not believe in Wessex independence but I do believe that English councils, including county councils, should have more say and control over their own affairs.
“England is one of the most centralised countries in the world with the Government in London having too much control over local issues.”
