SOUTHAMPTON is to be radically upgraded as a tourist destination after funding was agreed for an overhaul the city's street furniture and road signs.
Civic leaders agreed to invest £355,000 on the first stage of the Legible City project to improve signposting and information in the city centre.
The aim of the project is to help residents and visitors find their way around the city centre and give the heart of Southampton its own unique identity.
The project, which was launched by council chiefs in November 2004, also hopes to co-ordinate maps and other marketing literature about the city with a single brand - as well as making key areas easy to find.
Other ambitious plans in the pipeline include developing unique signs and street furniture for the city's distinct areas such as the "cultural quarter" and old town.
Developments will include a production of a map and guide to the city centre, better signage and newly designed information points, benches and litter bins.
