THERE'S an adage about not realising how invaluable a fire extinguisher is until you find yourself needing one. The same goes for toolkits on a bike for me.

Even though my Leather-man multitool goes everywhere I ride (or drive for that matter) I still pack a basic tool kit in my luggage for any longish journey.

It's not that I don't trust my bike, or the new one I take out for evaluation, it's simply a product of experience.

Over the years my pals and I have been able to fix many problems that would have otherwise meant calling for recovery as well as giving assistance to other riders stopped at the roadside.

Anyway, Murphy's law means if you have a toolkit you probably won't need it.

Rather than assemble a random selection of second best tools try the latest CruzTools M3 set.

The kit combines their popular premium tool kit with their compact mini socket set in a handy roll-up pouch that can be stashed in the tool roll on a metric' (Japan-ese) cruiser-style bike.

CruzTools of California have been producing superb tool kits since 1996 and have quickly built a reputation for quality - all tools are mechanic-grade with a lifetime guarantee.

While the M3 is aimed at cruisers, it will be equally popular with all riders who cover serious distances, whether touring or commuting and will also enable most routine maintenance to be carried out at home.

Included are four combination wrenches, (8, 10, 12 and 14mm), a 200mm adjustable wrench, locking pliers and a plug spanner and gauge.

As well as hex keys, six-in-one screwdriver (with two sizes of flat and crossheads) and 8mm nut driver, the kit also includes a mini socket set (8, 10, 12mm), an LED torch, tyre gauge, insulation tape, lock wire, lube and cable ties.

A pal has been using a set for a few years and the quality is top rate, after one 180-mile bedding down trip I can personally vouch that they proved invaluable.

The CruzTools M3 tool kit weighs just 1.36kg and retails for £44.99 inc. VAT.
