HAMPSHIRE is set to enjoy a major dose of modern art with an exhibition of work by Damien Hirst.

The Daily Echo can reveal that the world-famous artist has finally agreed a selection of his pieces can be shown in the Great Hall in Winchester later this year.

The city and county council have won funding for the show, which will run from September 21 to January 10 2008.

It raises the possibility that some of the most famous pieces of modern art will be displayed in Hampshire.

Mr Hirst is famed for his animals in formaldehyde, including a sheep, a cow, a calf sawn in half and a 12ft shark.

Chris Brown, a spokesman for 300-member Winchester Art Club, said: "I think it is brilliant."
