Hundreds of people turned out to mark the end of Ramadan at Ropewalk Community Centre in Derby Road, Southampton.

The event marked the end of the month-long religious festival which sees Muslims observing a daytime fast between dawn and sunset.

The weekend event was organised by the Muslim Council of Southampton and attended by scores of families as well as councillors and city mayor Cllr Sue Blatchford.

She said: “I’m delighted to see there were so many people enjoying themselves. The sun is shining as it always does in Southampton for special events and it is great to see different communities in Southampton all have these wonderful celebrations.”

The event was raising funds for Fitrah Islamic Primary School and humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Arshad Sharif, chairman of the Muslim Council, added: “This event could not have happened without the great volunteers we have here and most of the profit will go to the humanitarian efforts in Palestine.”
