THE victims of the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity will be recognised tomorrow. An exhibition in Southampton's civic foyer will mark Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day.
The Rev Ian Johnson, the rector of Southampton, will lead the unveiling of the exhibition at noon.
Members of the Jewish and other communities will then share their experiences of persecution, genocide and harassment. There will be displays looking back at the Holocaust and artwork from some of Southampton's schools.
Cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and communities, Councillor Liz Mizon, said: "This event is an important and sobering opportunity to reinforce lessons learnt from the past and ensure they are not allowed continue into the future."
Holocaust Memorial Day was set up by the Government as a specific day to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution and to also provide an opportunity to recognise other atrocities and acts of genocide in other parts of the world.The city council is also supporting the work of the Southampton Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Committee who will be hosting a commemorative event from 6pm on Saturday.
It will mark the seventh national Holocaust Memorial Day, in the Sir James Matthew building, at Southampton Solent University.
