NEWS that a large part of Southampton’s port will now open for business on a Sunday to meet demand will be viewed as a mixed blessing.
DP World have announced they are to run services on a Sunday to cope with demand. It will mean the business of moving containers from the docks will continue throughout the week.
The Christmas rush, in this case, has started early with much of the demand, says the company, coming from the need to start this month to gear up for the festive period.
Undoubtedly this will mean more work for those employed at the port and those who service the container industry.
Undoubtedly also there will be concerns from residents that the noise associated with such a vital industry will now continue throughout their weekend break.
The question will be asked: is this worth paying for the success of Southampton as a vibrant, modern port?
The answer is probably yes.
If Southampton is to continue to proposer and be at the forefront of the world’s ports it must provide services when they are required.
To balance those needs with the lives of its citizens, however, will be the greatest challenge.
