USUALLY when they put down their paintbrushes they swig tea and dunk biscuits.
But for one Hampshire group there was cause for a champagne celebration as they marked the 100th birthday of one of their longest standing members.
Joyce King, who has frequented the Winchester Art Club for over 30 years, regularly has her work showcased at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and the group's annual exhibition.
During a Saturday meeting, at All Saints Church hall, the club surprised her with bubbly, cake and a lively rendition of 'happy birthday'.
Mrs King said: “It meant a lot to me. I have been a member ever since I moved here in 1982. My son Geoffrey arrived with champagne and cake.”
Chris Sealey, publicity secretary, said: “She was totally taken by surprise. Members gathered to congratulate her and she sat and enjoyed it very much. I think she was very pleased.”
The 280-strong group will hold its 87th annual exhibition next month at the Winchester Discovery Centre. It runs from September 13 until October 5.
