A WAR memorial to Ordnance Survey staff who lost their lives in the two world wars will have a new home in Southampton.

The monument to 67 members of staff who died in the First World War and the 56 staff who died in the Second World War had been at the mapping agency’s previous headquarters in Romsey Road.

But when the firm moved to a new base at Adanac Park in 2012 a new memorial was commissioned, meaning the old one has sat in storage ever since.

Now the firm has won planning permission from the city council to site the old monument outside the Crown Court in London Road.

Ordnance Survey’s head of communications Rob Andrews said: “The significance of the law courts is that Ordnance Survey actually moved to London Road when we first moved to S o u t h a m p t o n back in 1841.

“It’s great that we have been able to get permission for the memorial in a year full of commemorations and remembering people who lost their lives in both world wars.”

A date for the formal unveiling of the memorial has not yet been decided, although it is likely to be later this year.
