FEATHER boas and high heels might not be that unusual for a Saturday night out, but they are when it’s male pub-goers donning the get-up – all for charity.

The annual Drag Race at Southampton’s Titanic pub has nothing to do with cars but instead calls on men to dress up as women and women to dress as men before taking on each other in races around the block.

The winners of the men’s and women’s races then came together for a final showdown.

Nearly 20 competitors took part and Andy Tavender, 25, of Shirley, was crowned the winner.

Andy, who is a doorman at Cloud Nine nightclub in Southampton, wore a Flintstones-inspired outfit.

There were also prizes for the prettiest and most ugly runners.

Landlord Martin Geer said the men had dressed up and then gone to Debenhams to have their make-up done before walking back across town to the pub in Simnel Street. They got plenty of attention on the way back, including wolf whistles.

Martin, who said he had gone for a more sophisticated look this year after being voted the ugliest last year, said: “It’s always a good atmosphere. It’s something different to watch and it’s just so stupid.”

The event, in its third year, has raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK, which is ringfenced so it can only be used by the Research Centre in Southampton.
