THE A36 was closed this morning after a motorist was killed in an accident.
The crash happened a mile past the Whiteparish junction going towards Southampton on the southbound carriageway.
A Renault van and a Peugeot saloon car were involved in the crash that happened at about 7.10am.
The driver of the Peugeot was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash while the driver and the passenger of the van were taken to Salisbury District Hospital.
A Wiltshire police spokesman said: "We can confirm an accident has occurred on the A36 and that one man, believed to be the driver of the Peugeot, is deceased."
Meanwhile the A36 was closed in both directions so investigations into the cause of the fatal accident could get underway.
The northbound carriageway was closed by Hampshire police at the junction with the B3079 and traffic diverted.
Heavy goods vehicles heading for Salisbury were advised to follow diversions towards Pauncefoot Hill to the A3090 and through Sherfield English and White Parish.
