TORRENTIAL rain led to floods across Hampshire after thunderstorms buffeted the county last night leaving home owners and businesses counting the cost of damage.

Across Southampton 15mm of rain fell after severe storms wreaked havoc across the city leaving water piling up to almost two feet high in some areas.

In Bitterne, dentist Noel Davies was forced to cancel appointments when he was told that his Somerset Avenue practice was flooded.

Two feet of water had built up outside the Gentle Dental surgery while inside was flooded up to an inch.

Noel, who has been practicing dentistry in Southampton for 26 years said it was “exasperating” to find it had been flooded.

He said: “I have drained at least a foot of water out from the back. I got all the water below the threshold. In the surgery it was about three centimetres (more than one inch).

“It's just very inconvenient, and it's dirty.”

Noel added that he has cleaned out the surgery to “surgical standards and washed the walls” in order to open on Monday morning.

However, he added: “I have been responsible. I should've had surgery. I had to cancel patients and tell them not to arrive for appointments.”

It isn't the first time that Noel has had to deal with a deluge of water at his practice.

Back in 1991 six inches of water came into the property and five years ago it was also flooded.

The water also affects flats nearby with seven families occupying the block also having to battle the water.

Noel added: “It all comes from the road. The drains get blocked by debris and it then overflows. My practice is at the lower point of three hills so it easily gets flooded.”

He expressed his “frustration” that when has been forced to clear the drains in the road himself the overflows is gone within minutes.

He said: “There have been two occasions when I have cleared the drains. It can be coming up the roadside and within 10 minutes it's all gone.”
