SOUTHAMPTON scientists have made a major breakthrough in a study that could change the way drugs are delivered in the body.

Researchers at the University of Southampton have been examining nanoparticles, which can improve the effects of medicine more than when it is administered in traditional ways.

The particles can be up to 100,000 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair and previously scientists found it difficult to make them penetrate human skin.

But now the Southampton team have been able to coat them in a special cell-penetrating substance, allowing them to make their way deeper through skin.
