THERE are just days left to have your say on major plans to overhaul a Southampton community.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, plans for up to 500 new homes, shops and public space in Millbrook, Redbridge and Maybush have been drawn up by the city council.

Consultation on the initial proposals was extended, and residents have until Sunday (Oct 19) to have their say on the plans.

The plans could see up to 230 homes built in the area around Millbrook Tower, with a new public square created.

New shops, sports area and road improvements also form part of the proposals, while 140 new homes could be built at the southern end of Green Park and 90 new apartments and maisonettes gong up in Kendal Avenue.

Up to 85 existing homes could be demolished to make way, while there has been controversy over the proposals to build flats over a football pitch on Green Park.

The plans have already been criticised by opposition Conservative councillors as not going far enough.

Redbridge Labour councillor Andrew Pope says he has “mixed views” as although he says there are “good ideas”, he also says the plans “are not ambitious enough” while he is disappointed the views of ward councillors were not taken into account by consultants drawing up the proposals.

After consultation ends, a steering group of residents, ward councillors and council officers will be put together to help look at the consultation responses and how the plans will progress.

While no work on the main elements is likely to start until at least 2016, council housing boss Warwick Payne says some parking improvements could begin before April next year.

He said up to 60 parking spaces are set to be built on land in Brendon Green, Chiltern Green, Porlock Road and Atherfield Road.

He added: “It seems to be a relatively mixed reaction to the proposals.

“It seems as if there is quite a lot of keenness to improve the estate and for new homes, but there are mixed opinions over exactly where they should be.”

You can obtain consultation forms online at southampton.gov.uk or at the Civic Centre, and can return them by emailing Housing.DeliveryandRenewal@southampton.gov.uk or posting them to Housing Delivery and Renewal, Southampton City Council, Ground Floor, Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LY.

The deadline is Sunday.
