AN ELDERLY woman is “incredibly lucky” to be alive after she was pulled from a countryside ditch by firefighters in Hampshire.
The woman, in her 70s, was discovered submerged in water and mud by a passing dog walker near Oakley Lane, Mottisfont, at about 11am.
It is thought she had been lying in the ditch for several hours.
Emergency crews took some time to locate the casualty due to the remoteness of her location.
It is believed she got stuck after her car became partly submerged in mud and her efforts to free it left her exhausted before she too became stuck in the mud.
Fire crews assisted medical teams and took the woman, who was suffering from the effects of hypothermia, to Southampton General Hospital.
Crew manager Pete McClemont, from Romsey fire station, said: “This woman was incredibly lucky she was found and she was able to receive medical treatment before her condition deteriorated.
“If you are going out in the country, always make sure you let someone know where you are going and an idea of how long you intend to be out.
“Ideally, try and take someone with you if possible.”
