A RETIRED local government officer died after falling and fracturing his skull in Winchester’s Tower Street car park, an inquest heard.
David Ellis had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease two months previously, but felt well enough to visit a branch of the Co-operative Bank to organise his financial affairs on August 1.
However, the 75-year-old then collapsed when he and his wife Ann returned to their car.
Paramedics took Mr Ellis, of Bereweeke Avenue, Winchester, straight to the neurological intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital, but he died there the next day.
A post-mortem examination concluded that he died of a serious head injury, sustained in a fall that may have been caused by Motor Neurone Disease weakening him.
Assistant coroner Sarah Whitby recorded a verdict of accidental death.
