A CONVICT'S bid to make a violent escape from an Isle of Wight prison has been foiled.

The man, who was found with a homemade ISIS flag in his cell at Parkhurst Prison, had plotted to take a prison officer hostage.

An internal Prison Service document revealed that a Muslim inmate in Parkhurst prison had drawn up the plan to make a dramatic break out.

However the attempt was foiled when officers raided his cell after another in-mate tipped them off about the escape.

The inmate is believed to have been radicalised in Parkhurst prison and officers also discovered he had ‘detailed’ plans including the interior of the jail. He has now been placed in the jail’s close supervision unit.

The details of the incident were in the weekly security bulletin of the National Offender Management Service. The bulletin stated: “acting on intelligence a prisoner's cell was searched.

“Detailed escape plans involving taking a member of staff hostage were discovered."

A Ministry of Justice (MOJ) spokesman praised the security measures used to thwart the inmate. The spokesman said: “Vigilant staff found a very basic description of the inside of the prison during a cell search. This clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of our robust security measures.”
