TESCO has reopened one of its convenience stores after a suspected arson attack this morning.
An investigation is underway after the refuse area at the Tesco Express store in Cobden Avenue, Bitterne Park, was torched at around 4am.
A spokesman for Tesco said it hopes to be serving customers in the next few hours.
Firefighters from St Mary's and Hightown fire stations were called to the store after reports of flames rising from a lean-to area at the back of the building.
Firefighters used one hose reel, one jet, and two breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown but a spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was a suspected arson.
A resident who lives at nearby Cobden Court said: "I heard commotion last night but nothing like a fire. It's quite surprising and quite scary.
"I hope they catch the people that did it."
Another Cobden Court resident, who did not want to be named, called the fire brigade after noticing the fire through his window.
He said: "I got up and saw an orange light through the curtain.
"I thought it was the bin men but when I looked out I saw flames.
“I called the fire brigade. I could see the flames over the hedge but couldn't see much.
"They were very prompt in getting here.
"I haven't seen anything like this before round here.
"It's not what you'd expect to see on a Monday morning."
A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We would like to thank our customers for their patience during this time. This is now a police matter.”
At approximately 4am someone set light to the back fence and there was minimal damage to the shop.
