CAMPAIGNERS have unveiled plans to transform a public open space by building state-of-the-art facilities “the whole community can be proud of”.
They have drawn up proposals to replace the 18-year-old skateboard arena at Bartley Park, Totton, with new ramps that meet modern standards.
Other plans, including a nature trail, an outdoor gym and a new-look BMX track, could result in a scheme costing at least £700,000.
Members of the newly-formed Bartley Skatepark Community Group have already approached a design company and are holding talks with Totton and Eling Town Council, which is being asked to help fund the project.
The campaign is being led by Jonathan and Jenny Harrison, whose son Daniel, 15, is among the skateboarders who use Bartley Park.
Mr Harrison said: “We want to turn it into a magical area that the whole community can be proud of.
“The existing skatepark is old and out-dated, with fibre-glass surfaces and ramps that wobble. It’s capable of being turned into an amazing facility that could be used for international competitions, bringing business to Totton.”
Campaigners have teamed up with Southampton-based Line Skateparks, which are designing the proposed new facilities.
Mr Harrison added: “We’re aiming to redevelop not only the skatepark but the surrounding area as well.
“Dirt jumps on the BMX track need to be regenerated so they can be used effectively. Other plans include an outdoor gym and a nature trail that could be designed by local schools.”
Totton county councillor David Harrison, who is also a member of the town council, is backing the scheme.
He said: “The skateboard park is a wonderful facility but it’s reaching the end of its natural life.
“Councillors were very impressed when a group of young people from the town presented plans to replace the skatepark and do other things besides.”
The council is hoping to use money from developers to help finance the project. Sponsorship from firms in the area is also being sought.
Fundraising events being staged in the community include Freaky Friday Funday at Butterflies Community Store in Rumbridge Street, Totton, on October 31.
A Christmas bazaar at Colbury Memorial Hall on November 29 is also being held in aid of the Bartley Park scheme.
