TWO HAMPSHIRE musicians tonight narrowly missed out on scooping a prestigious music award.
Singer Anna Calvi and electronic music producer East India Youth were in the running for the 2014 Barclaycard Mercury Prize.
But Scottish hip hop group young Young Fathers were announced winners at tonight’s ceremony at the Round House in London for their album Dead.
They beat off competition from the likes of Blur’s Damon Albarn, Kate Tempest, Bombay Bicycle Club and Royal Blood.
Anna studied a degree in music at the University of Southampton where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2003.
Since then the 34-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist has seen her music praised by critics and her debut album called Anna Calvi which was released in 2011 received a 9/10 review by top music magazine NME.
Her latest album, called One Breath, which was released in October 2013, also received favourable reviews.
East India Youth, aka William Doyle, 23, hails from Chandlers Ford and attended Toynbee School and Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh.
His debut album Total Strife Forever features experimental electronic music.
Back in 2012, alternative band Alt-J, who have Southampton musician Joe Newman in their ranks, won the prestigious prize.
