REPAIRS to an ageing leisure centre in Winchester have been delayed as civic chiefs wait to decide where it will be rebuilt.

Winchester City Council’s £4.2m work on River Park Leisure Centre has been deferred until 2015/16.

The centre, which dates back to the 1980s and emits more greenhouse gases than the rest of the council’s property combined, is set to be replaced in the next few years.

The council has proposed redeveloping the current centre and expanding on to nearby cricket pitches, while pressure group Fit for the Future wants a new facility on playing fields on the southern edge of the city.

Repairs to keep the current centre open have been delayed until a full report is submitted and a decision is made later this year, council accounts reveal.
