Your guide to what's on at the Society of Editors Conference in Southampton today.
• The Daily Echo’s editor-in-chief Ian Murray, president of the Society of Editors, will address fellow editors and media representatives.
• Full Steam Ahead discussion looking at the national and regional press and whether readership and advertising revenues are on the rise – chaired by Doug Wills, vice-president of the Society of Editors and managing editor of the Evening Standard and Independent titles and including Larry Kramer, president and publisher of USA Today; Clive Marshall, chief executive of PA Group; Paul Napier, group editorial development director of Johnston Press and Amol Rajan, editor of The Independent.
• Devolution and what it will mean for the media will be the next big topic of the day, with delegates examining what role the national, regional and local media play in the big debate set to dominate politics for the next 12 months.
This will be chaired by BBC South Today’s political editor Peter Henley, alongside Kevin Maguire, associate editor of the Daily Mirror; Andrew Pierce, consultant editor and columnist at the Daily Mail; Mike Sassi, editor of the Nottingham Post and Kevin Ward, editor of the South Wales Argus.
• The conference will then move on to look at Continuous Personal Development: Points to watch from the NCTJ Emerging Skills for Journalists report. Chaired by Donald Martin, editor-in-chief at DC Thomson Newspapers along with Kim Fletcher, chairman of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
• New threats to the media will be the topic to kick-start the afternoon session – chaired by Steve Hewlett, writer, broadcaster and media consultant, joined by Peter Barron, director of communications and public affairs for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Google; John Battle, head of compliance at ITN; Caroline Kean, litigation partner at Wiggin LLP and Matthias Spielkamp, founding editor of iRights.info.
• Protecting valuable content and access in the world of sports news will be the focus of a discussion chaired by Tony Husband, sports editor of BBC South Today, with a panel including Andy Moger, executive director of News Media Coalition and Julie Palmer, regional managing partner at Begbies Traynor Group.
• A debate on Digital Opportunities will be chaired by journalist, television presenter, author and media commentator Raymond Snoddy, with the panel featuring Kathryn Geels, programme manager at Destination Local; Alison Gow, digital innovations editor of Trinity Mirror Regionals and journalist and author Peter Jukes.
• Police and the Media will come under the spotlight in a discussion chaired by Simon Bucks, associate editor of Sky News, with a panel including Colette Paul, Chief Constable of Bedfordshire and chairman of ACPO Communications Advisory Group, and Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors.
• The day will close with a champagne and sea shanties reception – supported by Associated British Ports – and the black tie annual gala dinner. Guest speaker will be Gavin Millar QC, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers.
