THE headteacher of an Isle of Wight school has been suspended this morning following a health and safety audit.
Ms Linda McGowan was told about the action by the chair of governors at Ryde High School today.
A wall of secrecy is surrounding the matter, with new acting head Rob Hoddle and the school's chair of governors refusing to answer questions.
Isle of Wight Council spokesperson Simon Butler also refused to confirm what had happened and when, saying it could prejudice the ongoing investigation.
In a statement he said the action relates to a recent incident at the Pell Lane school that broke health and safety regulations.
It added: "Suspension is a neutral act to allow an appropriate governors investigation to take place at the school. The governors are receiving advice and support from Isle of Wight Council.
"Parents can be reassured this does not have any ongoing implications for pupils and staff at the school."
Mr Rod Hoddle, deputy headteacher of the school which is a specialist in arts and languages, is currently acting headteacher, whilst the investigation takes place.
Parents of the 1,118 pupils will receive letters home tonight.
