SUPERMARKET giant Tesco was today applying for planning permission for amendments to its latest Southampton store - five weeks after it opened.

At least 35 letters of objection have been received by the city council to plans for the firm's ninth Express store in the city.

It opened at the end of February on the site of the former Shell petrol station in Cobden Avenue, Bitterne Park.

The objectors say a survey should have been carried out to see whether additional traffic from shoppers would endanger pedestrians and air quality.

Full planning permission for the Cobden Avenue store, which created 20 jobs, was given in March last year.

But amendment works carried out to the roof, new signage drains and a rear door were not approved by planners.
