STREETS in a Hampshire town could soon become alcohol-free if councillors vote tonight to ban booze in all public areas.
If plans to make the whole of Farehamthe subject of a Designated Public Place Order are rubber stamped, police would have the powers to confiscate alcohol from anyone found drinking within the zone.
Officers could even dish out £50 spot fines to anyone who refuses to stop drinking.
Civic chiefs believe the move will help combat anti-social behaviour and youth crime across Fareham.
There is already a ban on drinking in public in areas including the town centre and Salterns Quay.
But police say troublemakers have simply moved to parts of the district not covered by legislation.
Designated areas outside of pubs and restaurants would not be affected by the ban, which could come into effect before the summer.
