A MAJOR rescue operation was launched in the Solent after a fire was reported on a motor boat with six people on board.

Solent Coastguard received the Mayday call yesterday afternoon (SAT) at 3.30pm from the 36-ft vessel 'Reef Raider' off Ryde, on the Isle of Wight.

A crew from Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service arrived on the scene within four minutes and removed the six-strong crew from the smoke filled boat.

The occupants - who were all wearing lifejackets and were unharmed - were transferred to Hamble rescue and taken to shore.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue crew was taken back to the burning vessel by Gosport Fareham and Inshore Rescue.

However, by the time they reached the vessel the fire was out.

The motor boat was eventually towed to Town Quay in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
