COUNCIL chiefs have turned down pleas for a pedestrian crossing from a group of elderly residents who fear they are becoming trapped in their own homes.
Pensioners living in sheltered accommodation in Victoria Road, Netley Abbey, say they are terrified to cross the busy road.
It can take up to half an hour for a gap in traffic on the road, which they must cross to visit shops.
Their calls have been rejected because the road does not meet criteria set out by Hampshire County Council.
A council spokesman said: "There are not enough people crossing the road, and there's no accident record or through traffic warranting a crossing."
