SCHOOLCHILDREN in Southampton are being encouraged to start thinking about local democracy early in the hope they will use their vote after they turn 18.

A new pack of resources has been launched for schools to use in citizenship lessons.

The Local Democracy Through Citizenship pack was launched with the help of Southampton Youth MP Cassie Chadbone, elected to represent the city's young people in January.

She said: "It's really important that when you get the chance to vote you do it. Democracy is about everyone having their say, so if you don't vote your voice isn't heard."

The project is being run by Southampton City Council's legal and democratic team and is designed to complement visits by councillors and council officers.
