FRIENDS in Hampshire will tonight pay tribute to a young county league cricket player and Saints supporter who died while on holiday in Mallorca with a charity match tomorrow night.

Black arm bands will be worn at a charity cricket match at Curdridge Cricket Club which this year will be held in memory of Jamie Todd.

The 21-year-old’s body was found off the coast near the resort of Magaluf on the Spanish island after he had gone on a night out with friends.

Now his friends want to raise cash for his family at the Reading Room Lane club when the players take to the crease at 6pm tomorrow night.

Two teams will be selected from club members for a game of 20-over cricket as they vie for the Ockenden-Broad trophy.

Chairman of the cricket club, Piers Ockenden said: “He played for us last season for Saturday and Sunday games.

"He was a cricket player who had quote good potential as a cricketer.

“One of his mates asked if we could hold the match in his honour and we said of course.

“There will be a minute’s silence before the game and black arm bands will be worn.

“Everybody knew him, it was such a shock when you hear about a young lad who’s died.”

It was Jamie’s friend Jay Nandha who came up with the idea for the game which will begins at about 6.30pm once the teams have been decided.

On Facebook he said: “Jamie loved cricket and to remember him we’re going to play a fundraising cricket match.

“He has been part of Curdridge and we will show respects to him by playing in his name.

“Please if you could attend it would be very much appreciated as I’m trying to raise money for him.”

People will be going round with buckets collecting money to give to the family “for whatever charity they choose”.

“Any donations will be gratefully received,” added Piers.

Jamie was reported missing by his friend when he failed to return to his hotel after a night out in Majorca. , a familiar face at The Master Builder pub in West End, failed to return to his hotel and his friends reported him as missing.

English-language Newspapers based in Mallorca reported that a holiday-maker who was had been snorkelling 300 metres away from the shore near Torrenova raised the alarm after discovering the body.

Jamie’s friends, some of who have now returned to the UK, were taken by the police to the port to identified his body and the Guardia Civil informed the family which the Daily Echo understands are out in Mallorca at the moment.

A spokesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed they were providing consular assistance to the family.

Officers in Palma, Mallorca, have said his death isn’t being treated as suspicious.

Reports say there was just a bump to one of his knees.

Jamie is understood to be the third British national to die in the wider Magaluf resort so far this year.
