EXPERTS are being called in to assist Winchester civic chiefs build its new headquarters.

The city council wants to demolish its current offices at Colebrook Street, which were built in the 1960s.

A new multi-million-pound HQ is planned, designed to be greener and cheaper to maintain and consolidating several departments scattered across the city.

Definite proposals emerged last year, and the Cabinet had an update of the scheme.

It heard that the council intends to enlist the help of a Government body - the South East Centre of Excellence - for advice.

The organisation was created in 2004 to help councils with major building projects.

Tony Langridge, chief estates officer, said SECE should be involved with the HQ scheme.

Cabinet members then agreed to speak to SECE about the plans. However, they have not committed the authority to any building works at present.

The Cabinet also heard that it was too early to say when the HQ might be finished.
