MOTORISTS using the M271 faced lengthy tailbacks after traffic lights at junction three of the motorway failed to work this morning.

Queues of vehicles stretched back past junction one for Nursling before the morning rush hour even began.

The delays were due to a problem with the phasing of the lights, which kept drivers waiting longer then normal to cross the busy junction which connects the M271 to the M27 motorway.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police said: "There was a problem with the phasing of the lights that was reported last night and has been passed on to the relevant authority to deal with.

"It is hoped it will be fixed shortly."

The lights on the roundabout sparked controversy last month when they were introduced by highways bosses.

They said they were introduced to ease congestion but instead sparked miles of tail backs after problems with the phasing system.
