AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a badger was found with its throat ripped out in Hampshire woodland.
At first it was feared the animal might have been the victim of badger baiters.
Hampshire police wildlife liaison officers and the RSPCA immediately carried out a probe following the discovery of the dead badger.
The horrific find in Stoke Park Woods in Bishopstoke has shocked locals who regard this picturesque corner as a haven for wildlife.
Investigations have drawn a blank as to the circumstances surrounding the badger's death.
A police spokesman said: "This incident was investigated by officers, however there was insufficient evidence to take the matter further.
"This incident is recorded and will be passed to the wildlife liaison officer to be looked at from an intelligence point of view to determine what proactive action can be taken to prevent similar incidents occurring."
An RSPCA spokesman said it appeared that the badger had died of natural causes.
