FOUR football fans were arrested after violence erupted between rival supporters at the end of Saints' crucial Coca Cola Championship victory over Leeds United.

Bottles and coins were thrown marring the end of the Championship crunch match.

The clashes were sparked by announcements over the public address system of results of other vital games up and down the country.

Saints fans began to taunt their northern rivals that they were destined for relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

Supporters of both teams squared up to each other across lines of stewards and police and missiles were hurled through the air from both sides after the final whistle.

A pocket of up to 150 Leeds fans tried to fight their way through to get at the Saints supporters.

Police dogs were used to keep the two sets of fans apart.
