Police today named the man who died after a collision on the M3 northbound yesterday.

David John House, 48, from Chandlers Ford was in collision with a blue Daf articulated lorry just after J12, near Eastleigh.

Mr House sustained fatal injuries and was taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

The driver of the Daf, a 51-year-old man from Waterlooville, was shocked but otherwise uninjured.

Meanwhile motoring organisations issued a safety following the death.

Andrew Howard of the AA said drivers and passengers who have to get out of their cars on the motorway should only get out on the verge side and get as far away from the road as possible.

He said: "The motorway hard shoulder is one of the most dangerous places on Earth. The message is get out and get away."

The M3 was closed northbound between junction 12 and 11 for four-and-a-half hours sparking travel chaos with heavy congestion on the M3, M271 between junctions 3 and 7, and on main roads out of Southampton and into Eastleigh.

Police are appealing for witnesses on 0845 045 4545.
