SCORES of students were evacuated from their accommodation last night after a discarded cigarette left several floors smoke-logged.
Firefighters called to Mercury Point, Duke Street, Southampton, at 10.40pm spent hours trying to establish where the smoke was coming from.
All three blocks had to be evacuated while crews from St Mary's and Redbridge stations searched the property.
It was discovered that a cigarette had set bark chipping alight in a flower bed, causing smoke to enter the building via the air vents.
The students were eventually allowed back in at 1am.
