An investigation was underway today after a 12-year-old girl was attacked on her way to school.
Police havenow wanred parents not to let their children walk to and from school alone.
The youngster was jumped from behind by a man, who tried to grab her and force her to the ground.
She managed to break free and escape from his clutches, running to her home nearby.
The attack happenned on a bridal path in hedge End, which runs between Maunsell Way and Beattie Rise.
The attacker, thought to be aged 25-29, was seen running in the direction of Billington Gardens.
A police spokesperson said: "While this is an extremely rare occurrence in the area, parents are advised to ensure their children are accompanied to and from school for their own safety while we fully investigate this incident and the motives behind it.
"We would also urge members of the public to report to us anything or anyone who is seen acting suspiciously in the area."
