PARENTS are being warned not to let their children walk alone after a 12-year-old girl was attacked on her way to school.

The youngster was approached from behind by a man who tried to grab her and force her to the ground.

The schoolgirl managed to struggle free from his grip and escape during the daylight attack.

Detectives were today stepping up the hunt for the man responsible, who struck on a bridle path in Hedge End as the girl walked alone at about 8am yesterday.

Police were called after the girl ran home to her mother who then raised the alarm. She was said by officers to be extremely distressed by what had happened and the attack was being treated very seriously.

The man, whom the victim describes as being aged 25-29, is said to have run from the scene in the direction of nearby Billington Gardens.

Detectives were urging people who live in the community and close to the bridle path to be vigilant while the motive behind the attack was investigated.

A police spokesperson said: "While this is an extremely rare occurrence in the area, parents are advised to ensure their children are accompanied to and from school for their own safety while we fully investigate this incident and the motives behind it.

"We would also urge members of the public to report to us anything or anyone who is seen acting suspiciously in the area."

Concerned parents of young children living near the scene of the attack said they would be more vigilant.

Gary Ford, 45, of Watkin Road, a staff nurse and dad of one, said: "It's quite worrying because it's on our doorstep. We often come here but we never let our daughter walk around. It is surprising that they tried that here because of the school run. There are lots of parents walking through the area."

Chris Sharp, 33, a computer programmer who lives in the area, said: "Generally I feel quite safe here so it is quite a surprise. My son is only two years old so I am not that worried about it but it must be a worry for all the other parents living around here."

The attacker is described as white, aged 25-29, 5ft 10in, with brown hair and with a large nose. He was wearing a blue shirt with a tie and black trousers.
