POLICE have launched an appeal for witnesses after a man was assaulted and seriously injured in in a Hampshire town last night.
The man was attacked in King's Road, Gosport, but managed to walk to a shop in Stoke Road where he raised the alarm shortly after 7pm.
The man was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth where his condition was described as serious but stable.
Crime scene investigators were last night examining the route the man took, and parts of Bevis Road, King's Road, Elmhurst Road and Stoke Road were cordoned off.
A 34-year-old male was arrested in connection with the attack and was being held at a Hampshire police station.
A spokeswoman for the police said they had spoken to a number of people in connection with the assault but they were appealing for more witnesses to come forward.
